| Our unrelenting thirst for
oil is affecting people's lives around the world. Oil production decimates
societies and cultures whilst denuding vast tracts of forest and polluting
air and water. In Ecuador, protest against construction of the International
OCP oil pipeline and the consequent expansion of drilling into national
parks and rain forests reached fever pitch in February when 3 citizens
died in protests. Far removed from oil's realities, we hear nothing
about what our way of life means to those forced to produce its key
ingredient. Newspapers here quote oil company press releases, if they
bother at all. There, in oil producing country, indigenous peoples
know that "the planet is in pain." Here, in oil consuming country,
we can't hear their muffled voices over the din of traffic. |
